A newborn may need NICU care if they are born prematurely, have a low birth weight, experience breathing or feeding difficulties, develop significant jaundice or infection, or have another medical condition requiring close monitoring and treatment. Some babies may need NICU care only for a short period, while others require longer support depending on their gestational age, health and response to treatment.
