A baby can usually be considered for NICU discharge when the neonatal team is satisfied that the baby is medically stable and can safely continue care at home. This generally includes maintaining body temperature, breathing adequately, feeding sufficiently and showing appropriate growth without requiring hospital-level monitoring or treatment. Parents are also guided about feeding, medicines if required, warning signs and follow-up care before discharge.
