Mild newborn jaundice is common and does not always require NICU admission. However, if bilirubin levels become significantly elevated, rise quickly, or the baby has additional health concerns, closer monitoring and treatment may be necessary. Treatment can include phototherapy, while more intensive treatment is required only in certain cases. The decision depends on bilirubin levels, the baby’s age, gestational age and other clinical factors.
