Not every baby with a low birth weight requires NICU admission. The decision depends on factors such as the baby’s gestational age, birth weight, breathing, feeding ability, temperature control, blood sugar levels and overall health. Babies who are very small or have difficulty maintaining these functions may require closer monitoring and specialized support in the NICU.
