Breathing difficulty in children should always be taken seriously. Seek urgent medical attention if your child is breathing very fast, struggling or working hard to breathe, has severe wheezing, cannot speak, feed or drink normally because of breathlessness, appears unusually sleepy or has bluish or grey lips or skin. Young babies and children with known respiratory conditions may require particularly prompt assessment when their breathing changes significantly.
