Young children commonly experience infections as their immune systems develop and they are exposed to viruses at home, daycare or school. Frequent colds and minor infections do not necessarily indicate a weak immune system. However, unusually severe, persistent or recurrent infections, poor growth, repeated hospitalizations or infections that are difficult to treat should be discussed with a pediatrician to determine whether further evaluation is required.
