Cough in children is commonly associated with viral respiratory infections, but allergies, asthma, pneumonia and other respiratory conditions can also cause coughing. A pediatric evaluation is advisable if the cough is persistent, frequently recurring, interfering with sleep or feeding, or accompanied by high fever, wheezing or chest discomfort. Seek urgent medical care if your child has significant difficulty breathing, bluish lips or appears unusually drowsy or unwell.
