Fever in children is commonly caused by infections, many of which are viral, although bacterial infections and other conditions can also cause fever. The child’s age, temperature and overall condition are important when deciding how urgently medical care is needed. Seek prompt medical attention for fever in a young infant, or if fever is accompanied by breathing difficulty, seizure, severe dehydration, unusual drowsiness, persistent vomiting, a concerning rash or significant worsening of the child’s condition.
