Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that is first diagnosed during pregnancy. It develops when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased demands of pregnancy. Many women have no obvious symptoms, which is why screening is routinely considered during pregnancy. Management may include dietary changes, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring and, when necessary, medication or insulin under medical supervision.
