A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, baby or both may require closer monitoring because of an increased likelihood of complications. Factors can include maternal age, high blood pressure, diabetes, multiple pregnancy, certain medical conditions, previous pregnancy complications or problems identified during the current pregnancy. Being classified as high-risk does not necessarily mean complications will occur, but additional monitoring or specialist care may be recommended.
