Bleeding or spotting during early pregnancy can occur for several reasons and does not always indicate pregnancy loss. Possible causes include changes involving the cervix, bleeding around the pregnancy, miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Because the cause cannot be determined from bleeding alone, it is important to inform your doctor, particularly if bleeding is heavy or accompanied by significant abdominal or shoulder pain, dizziness or fainting.
